Microneedling: what science really says

Microneedling: what science really says

An overview of the technique

Microneedling involves creating micro-perforations on the surface of the skin using small needles. This mechanical stimulation triggers a natural healing process: fibroblasts migrate to the treated area and produce new collagen and elastin fibers. This mechanism explains the improvement in skin texture observed after several sessions.

A reference study

To better understand this effect, a team of researchers conducted a study titled “Percutaneous collagen induction therapy: an alternative treatment for scars, wrinkles, and skin laxity” (Aust M.C., Fernandes D., et al., Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2008).

The authors followed patients who received four sessions of microneedling spaced one month apart and analyzed skin biopsies six months after the end of the protocol. Their histological analyses showed a significant increase in collagen and elastin deposits compared to baseline values, reaching about 400%pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. This observation is often cited to illustrate the ability of microneedling to stimulate collagen production.

What this means in practice

This spectacular result pertains to a specific protocol (four monthly sessions and an evaluation at six months) and was observed in a limited number of patients. The authors themselves emphasize that new controlled studies are needed to confirm the extent and duration of the effectspmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. In other words, this is not a systematic promise, but an encouraging indicator of the effectiveness of microneedling.

Why be transparent?

By presenting this data with its context, we allow you to better understand the potential benefits of microneedling while being honest about its limitations. This transparency complies with French and European regulations governing health and cosmetic claims.
